WYCSports Mobile App

WYCSports Mobile App

Summary: What’s Your Call Sports (WYCSports) is a gaming/entertainment platform that allows users to bet and compete with their companions without financial risks. Through WYCSports, users can enjoy the exciting feeling of competition, win, and redeem points in gift cards, discounts, and coupons.

Industry: Sports Tech / Gaming / Entertainment

Platform: iOS

My role: UX/UI Designer collaborating with cross-functional teams, including Product owners, stakeholders, product managers, and the developer.

Overview

WYCSports, a mobile-first platform, that aims to help users enjoy competing with peers in sports betting and practice and develop their sports betting skills without the risk of financial loss.

They call themselves the “Anti-Gambling” platform. Their mission is to help people learn responsible gambling through playing with points, setting limits on their time and money spent on sports betting, and getting in touch with their peers through live chatting.

Goals

  • Create screens that effectively convey the platform's concept and potential impact to investors.

  • Showcase the most compelling aspects of the platform, such as challenges, rewards, and team engagement.

  • Design visually engaging and user-friendly screens that excite investors and encourage them to fund the project.

Challenges

  1. Designing in a way that hints at the platform’s ability to grow and incorporate new features post-funding.

  1. Delivering impactful designs within the constraints of creating only a few screens, ensuring they represent the platform’s core features effectively.

  1. Designing screens that are straightforward enough for investors to understand but detailed enough to convey the platform's potential.

  1. Showcasing key features like challenges, rewards, and team interaction in a way that highlights usability and user appeal.

  1. Ensuring the screens clearly communicate the platform's concept and potential value to investors with minimal explanation.

Design Process

Design Process

Discovery:

I started my design process with user research and competitor analysis. I conducted 1:1 interviews and social media surveys (e.g., Twitter and Reddit) to gather user insights and I asked the following questions:

"How often do you engage in live betting, and what motivates you?"

"What features or aspects of the user interface do you find most intuitive?"

"Do you engage with online communities or social features on betting platforms? Why?"

The results revealed the following challenges users face regarding betting platforms:

  • Complicated platforms with no tutorials

  • Lack of personalization for favorite sports

  • Long processing times for withdrawals

  • Absence of time and money limits

Through competitor analysis, I evaluated competitors' strengths and weaknesses:

Strengths:

  • They offer a diverse range of live betting opportunities.

  • They offer user-friendly and feature-rich mobile apps for both iOS and Android devices.

Weaknesses:

  • They have inadequate customer service and support.

  • They are complex.

Developer Handoff:

I did a final review with stakeholders for any feedback and iteration. Then I worked with the developer to bring this prototype to life so stakeholders could present it to investors.

Design & Test

I created a moodboard of the platforms I found inspiring and decided on the typography

and design system. Based on the prioritized user pain points, findings, and

stakeholders’ feedback I started designing the prototype and developing the design system.

Since this project was for WYCSports to pitch to investors to raise funding, I skipped designing

the wireframes and jumped right into designing the high-fidelity prototypes.

Through A/B testing and task completion, I refined the design and prepared the final prototype for the investor pitch.

KPIs I used for usability testing and validate design decisions:

  • Error rate

  • Success rate

  • Time on task

  • Net Promoter Score (NPS)

Ideation:

I categorized and prioritized findings through affinity mapping and presented insights to stakeholders to gather different perspectives, and developed user personas and user journey maps.

Affinity mapping key takeaways:

  • Users need to personalize their homepage based on their favorite sports

  • They need a live feed/post/chat section

  • They need low redemption limits for quick and easy withdrawal

  • They need tutorials and easy navigation

  • They need to set limits for the time and money spent on the platform

Potential user Persona:

Alex wants to invite his friends to a challenge and also bet on tonight’s game.

Alex’s goals:

  • Feeling the excitement of competing with peers without financial risks

  • Personalized challenges

  • Set time and coin limit

Alex’s frustrations:

  • Lack of an app tutorial

  • Long redemption process

  • Set a time limit on the app

User journey map key takeaways:

  • Unlock hidden features/levels as users progress through the challenges

  • Include a variety of sports

  • Custom challenges and betting options
